Description:During the procedure of carrying Devi Sati’s body, the neck portion of Devi sati fell down in this particular place. The goddess is known as Mahalakshmi in this particular Shakti peeth where as Lord Shiva is known as Mallikharjuna Swami.

Origin of the temple is not known now. Hindu Puran has a chapter Srisaila Kandam which is based on this and this information hints us about the age and importance of the temple. Ramayana, Mahabharata and Purana has reference to this place and they are associated with some event that took place here. Here Shiva and Parvati appeared before Nandi bull as Mallikarjuna and Brahmaramba at the Mahakali temple. This place is also known as Sri Parvata. Lord Rama also came to this hill and himself founded Sahasra linga here. In Mahabharata, Pandaba also came here on this hill and founded Pandaba linga here.
